Crafting Your Novel with Vanessa McCausland

Vanessa McCausland is a Sydney based author, and she was last on the podcast not long after her second novel, The Valley of Lost Stories, came out, when she spoke to Pam about writing dual timelines. Since then, Vanessa has published two subsequent books, The Beautiful Words and Dreaming in French.

Like many writers, books were her magical escape portals, and she spent her early years soaking up as many as she possibly could. Writing provided a similar escape, and now she loves nothing more than disappearing into the fictional world of the book she is writing. Vanessa's stories always feature a mystery or an intrigue of some kind. Their pages abound with 'beautiful words', but she doesn't shy away from the darker side of life because in her words, "it's only through darkness that we really understand the quality of the light".

In this episode Vanessa talks about the inspiration for the characters in Dreaming in French, her writing process for this book, dual timelines, what she does when she comes up against a wall or a block, the challenges that she had in writing the book how she handled trying to get across the sense of the French voice in the story. And lots more!

This is a great episode for readers, but there is also so much writing craft chat for the writers. So sit back and grab a cuppa, or maybe pop on your headphones and go for a walk, and enjoy this episode of Writes4Women.
